What’s the best way to store boxes, furniture, and appliances in your unit?
Check out our insider storage tips!
Determine What Size Storage Unit You Need
- What are you storing and why?
The unit’s function will determine the right storage unit size. If you have to store business inventory, rent a larger unit that will give you room to grow. - Create an inventory list
You might have a general idea of what you want to keep in your storage unit. That’s a good start, but walk through your house and make a list so you don’t miss anything. - Visualize size with painter’s tape
Use tape to mark off a space the size of an average unit in your driveway or an open area. Then place empty moving boxes inside to see how quickly it fills up.

How to Prepare for Long and Short-Term Storage
- Use Plastic Containers
Plastic storage containers are considered the ideal storage solution. They’re easily stackable, self-sealable, and help protect your belongings from heat, dust, and anything else that might cause damage. - Clean Your Belongings
Make sure your things are clean before storing them. Thoroughly clean wood, leather & upholstered furniture, as well as clothes and appliances. - Be Careful with Fragile Items
Use bubble wrap and label boxes containing fragile items to make sure they’re handled with care and stored properly.
How to Pack Your Storage Unit
- Keep Fragile Items at Ground Level
Don’t stack fragile items on top of other things, or else they might fall and break. Keep fragile items in a specific area and don’t put anything on top of them. - Stack Vertically
Use the height of a storage unit to maximize your space. A 5×5 unit has only 25 square feet of storage space, but that’s 200 cubic feet to work with when used creatively. - Utilize Shelves and Furniture
If you’re storing shelves, desks, or dressers, use those furniture pieces to maximize the space by storing smaller items inside of them. - Form a Walkway
When using a larger storage unit like a 10×20, leave a small walkway so you may easily access items throughout your unit. - Leave Important Items Near the Front
If you’ll have to retrieve items from your storage unit often, keep them in the front so taking them in and out is more convenient.
TESTIMONIALS
What Our Clients Say
I really like Booth Street Self Storage. I have been renting from them for a few years now. They don’t bother you when you come to access your unit and I truly appreciate that because I find it to be very respectful. They don’t close their gates for lunch, and they also have summer hours which are longer and very convenient. I also really appreciate that they value communication as much as I do. I definitely recommend this storage facility to anyone looking.
Very professional, the unit was in great condition, no last month deposit, takes credit cards. Great location.
Always feel like my things are safe and secure. Random security, with cameras all over. Good price for a clean unit with no hassles.
Excellent staff and reasonable pricing.
